Now

What I'm doing now

If we haven't talked in a year, this is what I'd tell you over coffee.

Personal

I'm trying to stop starting my days in reaction mode. The current experiment is simple enough: decide tomorrow before I shut down today, and keep every commitment in one place I actually trust. When I miss a day, the rule is never miss twice.

Family

We're in family busy season right now transporting kids between many different activities. Both of my kids are gearing up for concerts in November. My daughter is busy rehearsing for an upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz (she's a featured dancer) and her December dance recital. My son just wrapped up his high school cross country season and is starting to transition into triathlon practice for the winter. He's also busy learning to drive (and can't get there soon enough so my wife and I aren't as much of taxi drivers...)

We're also excited to be spending time with a lot of our family over the upcoming holidays.

Work

At Protiviti I'm pushing GRC leaders to take the friction out of their technology controls. A lot of control sets have turned into museums: things we keep and mistake for protection. I'm writing about how to repack them on the Trail Map. I'm also waiting to hear if I'll be speaking on this topic at the Pittsburgh ISACA Information Security Day in December.

Scouting

I'm the Scoutmaster of Troop 457 in Zelienople, PA, and the job hasn't changed: help the Scouts run their own troop. What's on my mind lately is building a troop that doesn't depend on any one adult, me included. We're also building the troop a new website.

Health & Fitness

I've struggled sticking to a a fitness routine for a while. I'm trying to jump start that again. Strength comes first for the next several months, with easy cardio and daily walks as the part that doesn't get cut. Nobody ever properly taught me to lift, so I'm starting with technique and keeping the plan small enough to survive a busy week.

This is a now page, an idea from Derek Sivers. If you have your own site, you should make one too.
